Kazan – Mecca for tourists.

A man who’s never been to Kazan didn’t see Russia.

Everyone goes somewhere – I go to Kazan.

18 reasons to visit Kazan

1)      The breath of history. Kazan is a city with a 1000 years biography. It’s older than Moscow and Yaroslavl, whereas such cities like Nizhny Novgorod, Saint Petersburg, Samara or Kostroma are young enough to be Kazan’s great-grandchildren. Kazan’s Kremlin is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

2)      Exotics. In Kazan, which is the capital of the Tatars, it is on every corner. Amazing architecture where traits of East and West are whimsically interwoven. Extant blocks of the Old-Tatar settlements, the minarets of mosques neighboring the bell towers and steeples of churches. “Tatar village” is an ethnographic complex in the city center. Huge multi-lingual bazaars, i.e. markets with ridiculous prices.

3)       Shopping. All biggest retail chains settled in Kazan Long time ago. There is more retail space for a citizen of Kazan, than for a Moscow’s citizen. More space causes low prices!

4)      Sabantuy. This Tatar folk festival is a candidate on the list of UNESCO World Spiritual Heritage.  It’s useless to tell about Sabantuy. You should see it yourself! All we can say is that during Sabantuy which takes place in Kazan all guests and citizens have fun! This performance can be even compared with Carnival in Rio de Janeiro! Three Russian presidents took part in it. Boris Yeltsin beat pots blindfolded, Vladimir Putin dived into katyk (a drink made from baked milk) and Dmitry Medvedev tried himself as a blacksmith.

5)      Rest. You can visit Kazan’s aqua parks, theatres, children park “Shurale”, circus or Kazan’s unique hippodrome where racing for the prize of the President of Russia took place two times and where the stables are artwork (there are even swimming pools for horses). There are two pedestrian streets, namely Bauman St. and Peterburgsky St., and sandy beaches which are not much shorter than Brazilian Kopakaban. You can also visit a hunting club which is located 10 km from the city center. Here you’ll have an ability to hunt for a moose or a hare, or just shoot from different types of arms. If you like fishing you don’t have to go far! As Kazan stands on three lakes and two rivers (the Kazanka and the Volga) dividing the city into two parts right in the middle, fishing can be made even in the centre of our beautiful capital.

6)      Museums. Kazan’s “Hermitage” is a second (after London) branch of the State Hermitage Museum in the world where masterpieces from its reserve-stocks are exhibited. Museum of Fine Arts exhibits original masterpieces of Feshin, Shishkin, Repin, Savrasov and others. Museum of Socialistic way of life is a unique one to show how life in the USSR was going.  Famous Russian contemporary artists like Makarevich, BG (Boris Grebenschikov), Shevchuk, Rosenbaum and others presented their belongings with personal autographs to this museum. All in all there are three dozen museums and galleries in Kazan.

7)      Festivals. Shalapin’s International Opera Festival, Rudolf Nuriyev’s International Festival of classic ballet, “Aksenov-fest” – the festival which was started by Andrey Makarevich and Vasiliy Aksenov. International Muslim Film-festival, Jazz Festival “At Sandetsky’s”, a modern art festival called Kremlin Life which is held in the walls of the ancient Kremlin.

8)      Christian Relics. A miraculous icon of Kazan Madonna, which is highly revered by Orthodox church, is kept in Kazan. Till 2005 it had been kept in the Vatican but then was returned to the city by the Pope. Every believer dreams to touch this orthodox relic once in his or her lifetime. In the Virgin Monastery of Raifa another icon is kept, that of Georgian Madonna. On the island-city Sviyazhsk located 40 km from Kazan you’ll find an old wooden church which was built by Ivan the Terrible’s soldiers. This is the oldest wooden church in the whole Volga region.

9)      Cuisine.  There is a big variety of different dishes in Tatar national cuisine. Foal’s meat, cooked on coals, dried goose, chak-chak (honey cookies in form of short noodles), tokmach, echpochmak - these are only few delicacies that can be tasted in Kazan. Once you try it you’ll love it forever!

10)    Muslim Relics. Kazan is the northernmost Islamic capital. Russia’s oldest mosque Mardjani and the biggest mosque Kul Sharif and the tombs of Kazan khans can be found only in Kazan. A hundred kilometers from Kazan there lie the ruins of Ancient Bulgarian capital. That is where the ancestors of today’s Tatars adopted Islam more than 1000 years ago. A lot of Muslim pilgrims come from different parts of the country to bow to this holy place.

11)   Hospitality and Tolerance. The goodwill and toleration of local people are legendary. To make sure this is not a legend you should just come to Kazan and see everything with your own eyes! You’ll see a unique Temple of all religions, the mosques, the orthodox temples, the old believer’s churches, catholic cathedrals, lutheran and protestant churches. Not far from the temple which was build in memory of Russian soldiers killed during Kazan’s assault, Kul Sharif mosque stands. It was established in memory of the defenders of the city who were killed during Ivan the Terrible’s attack. This neighborhood does not surprise anyone: let bygones be bygones. Local Muslims, Russian Orthodox, Catholics, Jews, Lutherans live in peace for centuries and they all learned the truth which still cannot be understood in other places: God is one for all. Both natives and immigrants who came from the ex-USSR republics feel themselves comfortable and live in peace. Multilingualism and diversity of cultures are welcomed in Kazan!

12)   Sport.  If you dream of getting to the Champion league’s or European league’s matches or watching a high level ice-hockey match you are to visit Kazan! Kazan is usually called the champions’ capital. Two-times football champion of Russia “Rubin”, “Ak Bars” (two-times Gagarin Cup’s holder in hockey), “Unics” (the winner of the Russian Basketball Cup), “Dinamo Kazan” (the winner of European champions’ cup in bandy and Russian champion), ”Zenit-Kazan” (the two-times country’s champion in volleyball) … Please order tickets in advance!

13)   Formula One. Kazan is the only Russian city where one of the stages of water Formula One World Cup is regularly held. This exciting competition is as breathtaking as a normal formula 1. Races of water bolides take place in the centre of the city, on Lake Kaban. You can watch the race both from VIP tribune and from benches on the lake’s coast. The latter site is totally free!

14)    Treasures. As a legend says there exist great treasures of Kazan khans being still hunted. They disappeared in 1552 when Kazan was assaulted by Ivan the Terrible. According to the legend Kazan citizens loaded all jewelry into the barrels and made it sink to the bottom of Lake Kaban. Everyone, who knew the place were killed during the war. There should be someone lucky to find the treasures! By the way, in 1918 a wagon of gold disappeared in Kazan. The thing is that the gold reserve of Tsarist Russia was brought to Kazan and then evacuated when the White Czechs attacked the city. 50 tons of gold were gone during the transportation… and they are still in quest.

15)   World Events. In summer of 2013 World Student Games will take place in Kazan. In 2 years, in 2015, Kazan will welcome World Championship in water sports and in 2018 footballers will show their best on FIFA World Cup in Kazan!

16)   Great Kazan citizens. Gala, Salvador Dali’s muse, was born in Kazan. Igor Kurchatov worked on and developed an atomic bomb. Sergey Korolev made his first steps in rocket building. Lev Tolstoy, Gavriil Derjavin, Fedor Shalyapin, Maksim Gorky, Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Sergey Aksakov, Nikolay Feshin, Nikolay Lobachevsky, Vasily Aksenov… All these famous people lived and worked in Kazan in different periods of time. Memorable places associated with these great people are still on the streets of the old city.

17)   Mecca for Youth. There are a lot of clubs, parties, extreme events let alone institutes and universities. So have fun!

18)   Unique Memorials. Among the most famous is the Suyumbike tower. It is one of several falling towers of the world. Its spire has deviated from the vertical by about two meters. According to the legend the last Kazan Khanate queen Suyumbike by name rushed down from its highest tier to avoid being captured by the enemy. In Kazan, if you’re lucky, you can enter the cockpit of the world's first passenger supersonic jetliner Tu-144, one of the two remaining unique jetliners in the world settled on its eternal parking in Kazan.

By the way, interview which took place on the website of Russian presidential ambassador in Volga region showed that the first three out of five miracles of Volga region that ought to be visited are situated in Kazan and its surroundings. The miracles are: Kazan Kremlin, island-city Sviyazhsk and ancient city of Bulgar.
